Installation Options

Users requiring the use of RSLogix software versions that do not operate on Windows 7, may consider these options:
  1. Format and install Windows XP Professional on the new PC, via a Microsoft Volume Licensing (VL) program or similar entitlement.
  2. Rockwell Automation Industrial Computers are still built using Windows XP.
  3. Downgrade the new PC containing OEM versions of Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate.
  4. Consider installing a virtualization platform capable of running Windows XP and maintain the older software on it.

Virtualization

The official Rockwell Automation Software Product Compatibility Matrix Answer ID 42682 contains complete Virtualization details, below are the basics:
  • VMware Workstation is the preferred virtualization platform to install and run multiple operating systems at the same time on the same physical computer.
  • Microsoft Virtual PC 2007  for Windows Vista or Windows XP to install and run multiple operating systems at the same time on the same physical computer. Not supported mainly due to issues with the FactoryTalk concurrent activations.
  • Windows Virtual PC with Windows 7 XP Mode is a single virtual copy of Windows XP Service Pack 3 that can be installed for free on Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions. Windows XP Mode is now available for PCs without Hardware Assisted Virtualization Technology. Please refer to Answer ID 341918 for a list of specific Rockwell Software products that are supported in XP mode.

Windows Vista / 7 Specific Notes

It's recommended that User Account Control (UAC) turned off:
  • RSLogix 5000 v19 works with User Account Control (UAC) set to 'Always notify', however older versions do not. If RSLogix 5000 v17, v18 and v19 are on the same computer... disable UAC.
  • The RSLinx Classic configured drivers list maybe blank if not disabled. Click START and type UAC... then drag the slider down to the bottom.
For EVRSI floppy disk activations, right click on EVMOVE program (or shortcut) icon and use "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" to transfer the license.
Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) is not included on Windows Vista or Windows 7 and will need to be installed separately if pre-v18 RSLogix 5000 software is used.
* Final disclaimer for RSLogix versions that are not officially supported on Windows 7 or Vista, use at your own risk. In the event the software does not operate correctly, users may need to revert back to an operating system that was tested and supported.
